Note: Starting with distribution 22.5 the 64 bit GAMS version can not be installed on a 32 bit operating system. Also the GAMS IDE will pop up a warning, when running the wrong version of GAMS. You get this error when trying to execute the 64 bit version of GAMS on a 32 bit version of Windows. Unfortunately with older GAMS version ( until 22.4) you can run the setup.exe programm without getting a warning.

Under Unix and Mac OS X both the name of the GAMS system directory and the name of the user's working directory currently (22.8) must not contains blanks (space signs). Thus do not have directory names like /software/gams system/22.5/ or /home/joe/my models/.

There are some special considerations when GAMS has been installed on a network drive. Please run the GAMSIDE and select Help Topics from the Help menu. Then click on Installation Notes and read those. This error also occurs, if your project directory is on a network drive that is not mapped. Try to map it or create a new project on a local disk drive.

Starting with distribution 22.5 (June, 2007), the windows systems have been successfully tested under MS Vista (both 32 and 64 bit) and there are no known issues. We started to test GAMS with Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit) and Windows Server 2008 (both 32 and 64 bit) with distribution 23.3 (November 2009).

There have been some issues with the installation of GAMS on Ubuntu Linux 64 bit (Linux ubuntu64 2.6.22-14-server). The main issue issue is that by default only 64bit programs will work there. If you have a Windows computer, go to Start -> All Programs -> GAMS -> gamside. If you don't see GAMS there, then you should reinstall GAMS. To open a local copy of the GAMS Model Library in the GAMS IDE goto File -> Model Library -> Open GAMS Model Library. Either press Enter or double-click the entry to open the file in the IDE; press F9 to run it.

A GAMS license is generated as a plain ASCII file of 5 lines, which has been sent to you either within an e-mail or as an e-mail attachment. Please make sure to copy all five lines into a file gamslice.txt and do not try to modify the contents of the license - or the system will downgrade to a demo system. Without a valid license file GAMS will operate as a free demo system with these limitations.

Please check, whether you have installed your license correctly. If this is the case, you may have selected a solver as default, which is not included in the license. To verify this (using the GAMSIDE), goto File -> Options -> Solver. Solver, which are marked Demol will only work within the limitations of the free demo version. You can select the default solver by clicking on the appropriate field in that matrix.

If your system is still under maintenance and support, please check whether you use the latest license file you have received from us. We have received reports that some versions of the Symantec AntiVirus program were complaining about a virus (Trojan.Lootseek.AV) in two files (gmsbd_nx.exe, gmssb_nx.exe) during the installation of the Windows version. It is safe to ignore that warning and continue with the installation. This false positive classification has been confirmed by Symantec and the detection will be removed from their products. Please update your virus definitions in case that warning pops up.
